We live in Ohio and experienced a house fire last new year’s eve. We had been out of town. We lost everything. We filed a claim with our homeowners insurance policy and came close to maxing out our coverage in order to rebuild and replace what was lost, but we were in no way “padding” the bill, and actually ended up in a financial hardship because they did not pay us near what we had invested in the home and our possessions.

It’s been a year, we have never had any other claims with them before or after. Today I received a letter that they have chosen not to renew our policy. Is this something I should fight? Will we have trouble finding new coverage after this claim?

Thanks.

I live in California. 7 months ago, we did a complete kitchen remodel. New cabinets, new wood floor, new appliances, countertops, etc. I just found out today that my dishwasher drain line has been leaking for 7 months. We didnt detect it immediately because the kitchen floor is slightly uneven and the water was pooling towards the back of the wall. Behind my dishwasher and under the floor, it is VERY WET. The drywall is soaked, the floor is saturated and my cabinets are showing signs of water saturation.

My question is….can I file a claim against my homeowners insurance? Im fearful that there is massive water damage behind the walls and that a quick fix will only lead to more repairs down the road.

We have a policy with Travelers that was $1047.00 a year. I shopped around for new insurance and now have a new policy for $538.00 for the same coverage but the house value has been adjusted to what it is actually worth now (it seems that they were still working off of the value during 2006 when we got the policy). The new policy will become effective as soon as the old one ends on July 1, 2009. However I’ve paid into my escrow all year for what the anticipated bill of 1000 was going to be for homeowners, now there is going to be extra money in the escrow account, as well as all the money that is in there for my taxes (enough is in there to fulfull that obligation as well). My question is will Countrywide (now BOA) refund me the overpayment into escrow? I wouldn’t mind if they put it towards the principle of the home but I would rather put it as a payment against my credit card (also through BOA) instead. And also, how long does it take for the Mortgage company to readjust my payment as my insurance is now lower (in the past when my premium had gone up they adjusted the mortgage payment to put more into escrow), but now it will not need as much. AGain, I wouldn’t care if more was put towards principle but I would like to get my CC paid off sooner and it has a higher interest rate than my mortgage.

Buying homeowners insurance in Maryland can be expensive … unless you know what to do and where to go to get discount rates. Here are four tips that will help you save big bucks on your homeowners insurance.

Maryland Homeowners Insurance

Homeowners insurance is a necessity if you want to insure that your house and your belongings are safe from fire, theft, vandalism, and weather damage. Homeowners insurance not only protects your home and your personal property, it also protects you from lawsuits when people hurt themselves in your home.

Money-Saving Tips

1. Insure your home, not your land. When you buy a home your mortgage company probably based your homeowners insurance on the appraised value of your home. Appraisals include the value of your land, which you don’t need to insure.

To get the amount of homeowners insurance you need, ask a local builder how much it would cost to rebuild it and use that figure.

2. Get the highest deductible you can afford. For instance, raising your deductible from $250 to $1,000 will save you up to 25% on your annual premium. Raising your deductible also prevents you from filing excessive claims which can cause your insurance company to cancel your policy.

3. Combine you home and auto insurance. Purchasing your home and your auto insurance with the same company can save you as much as 15% on your yearly premium.

4. Install Safety and Security Features. Installing fire alarms, burglar alarms, sprinkler systems, dead bolts, window locks, and fire extinguishers not only gives you a big discount on your insurance, it also gives you peace of mind.

The Biggest Money Saver

Homeowners insurance can vary by $1,000 or more from one insurance company to the next, so the best way to save the most amount of money on your insurance is to compare rates from different companies.

The simplest way to do that is to go to an insurance comparison website where you can get rate quotes from a number of insurance companies. A few of these sites even offer an online chat feature and a toll-free telephone service where you can get advice from an insurance expert. (See links below.)

A friend of mine was injured when he was horsing around with another person at someone’s house. Now, the two people involved, the injured and the injuree (?) are not the homeowner. Can the injured person try to the get homeowners insurance to cover it? They can’t lie their way about how the injury happened since they told the hospital it came from the two guys horsing around. My thinking is, it might have been covered IF the person slipped or fell and there was no involvement by anyone else but since it was these two guys messing around, why would the homeowner or his insurance, be liable if it is? My guess is, unless it was the homeowner that caused the injury, or was caused by a fault or accident in the home itself, these people have no chance of getting the insurance company to pay. Any thoughts?
