Home insurance?

Kavan Lee asked:

Do home insurance plans typically cover flooding? I ask because a home that I’m considering buying is only about a block from the shore (in earthquake-prone northern California) and we all learned a few years ago that earthquakes can cause tsunamis, dams/levys can break, etc.

Any other considerations to be had?

Thanks!

Home has an unpermitted room and bathroom downstairs. There’s damage caused to the home such as a fire let’s say, and the source of the damage is *not* the unpermitted units. Would insurance still provide compensation?

I’d **** to have to cough up all the money to legalize these units, which came with the house when purchased.

My husband are first time home buyers so we are still learning a lot. We are calculating a home which we can afford. We are also calculating the monthly payment that is going to be most comfortable for us. I am nervous though, about continue increase of taxes or house insurance which will obviously raise my monthly payment every every year. so basically I am asking, for your home owners what have you experienced in cases of your monthly payment going up because of increased property taxes or insurance?

There are two large maple trees in my backyard. They were planted when the house was built in 1955. Recently we had some plumbing work done on our house in the basement crawlspace and the plumber told us that the roots of the trees are starting to come into the basement. If they continue they will damage the foundation of the house. Is removing the trees something that my homeowners insurance will cover because they are damaging the house? If so what do I need to do to get them to cover it?
