A question from liipl 2: Is there a site online where i can see a full list of companies that offers house insurance?
Is there a site online where i can see a full list of companies that offers house insurance? I mean companies offering house insurance throughout USA and Canada?

Best answer:

Answer by mbrcatz17
No, because not all companies offer insurance in all states, and many do not offer coverage out of hte country.

If you’re looking for a particular state, you can go to that state insurance department’s website, and they usually have posted the companies licensed to do business in that state.

Keep in mind, however, that some companies who are NOT licensed to do business in that state, will still write coverage for houses (not a true homeowners package policy), so it’s not all inclusive.

If you wish to put in the 150 hours or so of work it’s going to take to compile the list, and post it on the internet for free, feel free to do so.

Question posed by Moon Walker: How can I buy home insurance if I use one room for my business?
Hello there! I am a freelance web publisher so basically I work from home using my laptop. My husband and I just bought our first home. The other day I was shopping around for home insurance when an agent told me if I run my home business many carriers will mark me as “not eligible” for home insurance. Is this true? How do I get around that? What’s the best home insurance company?

Best answer:

Answer by it’s me
Do you meet clients at your home? Do you have people coming and going throughout the day in relation to your business? If yes, then you may have a problem, but only with restrictions on your policy (ie, possible theft clauses). If you don’t have business related visitors to your property then you really shouldn’t have a problem finding insurance.

They have no problem taking your money, but as soon as you have a claim, they start using various tactics to keep you from getting what you are owed under your policy. Insurance companies will often do some of all of the following: DISPUTE Claims Often the insurance company will ask you to give them all kinds of information, then nitpick and ask for more. Sometimes it seems like a game to them, but it sure seems one-sided to you. They have a lot of excuses, but not much in the way of help and assistance when you need it most. Often it even feels like the insurance company is trying to blame you for their own delays and disputes. DELAY Claims Sometimes the insurance company won’t come right out and deny a claim immediately. A lot of times, they just wait to make a decision. Meanwhile, bills and other expenses are piling up. Some insurance companies have gone so far as to mail the wrong forms on purpose and then deny a claim because the policyholder did not submit the correct form. In short, the insurance company is trying to make it so hard to file a claim that they hope the person just gives up. DENY Claims Sometimes insurance companies will come right out and deny a claim. They may even deny a claim without investigating or for another improper reason. When

I’m thinking someone was probably pulling your husband’s leg. People may have a multiline policy with their insurance (auto, home, fire, life, etc.) but it needs to be specified which policies they have.

A question asked by tobeyp2005: Why is it that insurance companies don’t want to insure property that is rented out?
I would like to buy a trailer and rent it out. I am particular about tenants and I take care of my property. Insurance companies frown on rentals. Why is this when the landlord also wants to have good tenants and a good investment?

Chosen answer:

Answer by txguy8800
Although you may be particular, the law prevents you from being too particular. And, you could be particular but tenants could fool you. The end result would be that insurance companies would be liable for your mistake. Because of that, the insurance companies will either not insure or make the insurance so expensive you wouldn’t want it.

A question asked by Steve: When office space decreases, should property insurance premium decrease?
I own businesses. One of my businesses downsized its office space. We didn’t move. We just reduced the space we occupy within the same building.

When my company’s office space decreases its square footage from 5,000 to 1,000 within the same space (same building/floor), shouldn’t my property insurance premium also decrease? Why?

Selected answer:

Answer by mbrcatz
If you’re the tenant, then the rating basis isn’t the square footage occupied – it’s the PROPERTY LIMIT. If the limit of coverage stays the same, then the fact that you’re occupying less coverage, is completely irrelevant. Also, like the E&O you just asked about, there’s still a “minimum premium” that applies to the policy.

Square footage is one of four commonly used rating basis for GENERAL LIABILITY. Typically, you’d see it most often in warehouse risks. Not having any idea what kind of business you have, odds are, square footage isn’t a rating basis for the GL either.
