this is a really dumb question, but I think my garage roof may cave in soon in a specific area. not a huge area and the shingles are falling off. Would homeowner’s insurance cover any of this if it does ‘cave’ in that spot?

If it’s caving in because it’s rotted and not maintained, no.
If it caves in because a tree lands on it, yes.
You have a duty to maintain your house. If you’ve let the leaky roof not be repaired, causing the wood to rot, etc, then this is NOT a sudden accidental thing – it’s an ongoing lack of maintenance, and not covered.
