We were actually getting ready to put a deposit down on one of these dogs next week but thought I should check first as this could definitely complicate things a bit. Home has an unpermitted room and bathroom downstairs. There’s damage caused to the home such as a fire let’s say, and the source of the damage is *not* the unpermitted units. Would insurance still provide compensation?

I’d **** to have to cough up all the money to legalize these units, which came with the house when purchased.

I live in a hurricane zone and apart from that I have always been afraid of fire or earthquakes. The cost is almost prohibitive, but my house is now insured, in time for the hurricane season and I feel so much more relieved.

My friend says one of the dictums of insurance is that if you can replace it yourself then you shouldn’t insure; if you can’t then you should.
